Are Cd/dvd disks recyclable?
Could I just put CD’s into my Blue Box for recycling or do they need to be taken somewhere special? i am in Ontario Canada.
Discs are not easily recyclable- your municipal waste utility certainly can’t handle them, so keep them out of the blue box lest they be forced to dump your whole box in the landfill because it’s contaminated.
There are specialized outfits that recycle (or at least recover) some of the substances in discs. Most of these are free, but you cover the costs of postage.
One day, I’d love to see the cost of recovery borne by the manufacturers themselves. They’d of course pass it on to the consumer, who needs to be aware of the costs they incur (they already pay them, just as higher taxes and utility fees). When people have adequate information and directly (rather than indirectly) feel the costs of their actions, they usually make good choices.
